Our church is on the corner of Dunbar Hill Road and Benham street, in
Hamden. I’ve been pastor here since February, 1994. The people who started
this church in the late 1940’s called it Dunbar United Church. They met in the
Fire House for dances on Saturday nights and then got together again the next
morning to worship. Eventually, they bought land from a farm across the street
and built a church with a gold dome on top, and a large gold cross on top of
that. The architecture is a mix of Byzantine and Greek Revival, but the
congregation is totally Connecticut. At some point the church became a part of
The United Church of Christ, so “of Christ” was added to “Dunbar United Church,”
to make “Dunbar United Church of Christ.”
We call ourselves Open and Affirming which means we celebrate the image
of God in each person as it shines through every race, color, age, ability, and
sexual orientation. I keep our focus on Jesus Christ, the human expression of
divine love. The love of Jesus is our key to understanding the Bible and our
Christian faith. The apostle Paul told the Philippians: “Let the same mind be
in you that was in Christ Jesus.” That is what we seek here. We ask God to
cultivate the “mind of Christ” in us and we trust God to work this miracle of
transformation every day.
